KEYGEA begins with thoughtfully selected, plant-based materials that make single-serve coffee more sustainable. Developed in partnership with NatureWorks, our pods are crafted from Ingeo™ PLA, an innovative biopolymer derived from renewable crops like corn and sugarcane.
Through a specialized process, these plant sugars transform into a compostable material that naturally decomposes. By minimizing fossil fuel use and cutting down waste, KEYGEA supports a healthier planet while ensuring a premium coffee experience.

FAQ
What is the shelf life of the empty pod?
The pod material (PLA) is stable over time. The default shelf life is set at 36 months.
Does KeyGea suffer from aging like other compostable capsules?
Most compostable capsules are sensitive to time and humidity, leading to brittleness, poor sealing, or dimensional instability (known as aging). KeyGea’s formulation has been optimized to eliminate this risk. With proper storage, it maintains consistent mechanical and sealing performance over time.
Can consumers compost KeyGea at home?
KeyGea is certified for industrial composting only. It should be disposed of through commercial composting facilities.
Is KeyGea compatible with standard filling and sealing lines?
Yes, KeyGea has been successfully tested on several industry-standard filling and sealing lines. We’ll be happy to collaborate directly with your selected machine manufacturer to fine-tune settings and ensure smooth performance and high sealing reliability on your specific equipment.
Is KeyGea compatible with different sealing technologies?
Yes, KeyGea has been tested and validated for both heat sealing and ultrasonic sealing.
Can I request samples?
Yes. We can provide small batches for evaluation
— typically 100-200 units —
including a mix of empty pods, pre-mounted pods with filter, and swatches of lid and filter material for testing on your line.
What is the KeyGea pod made from?
The KeyGea pod is made from Ingeo™ PLA, a biopolymer derived from renewable plant sugars (e.g., corn or sugarcane).
Is the KeyGea pod certified as compostable?
BPI certification is currently in progress and expected shortly (Q3 2025). One of our customers has already achieved BPI certification using the same pod body.
Is the entire system (pod, lid, filter) compostable?
Yes. We have validated the KeyGea pod with compostable lidstock and filter paper from certified suppliers. When using our recommended combinations, the entire pod system qualifies as industrially compostable.
Can I use a different lid or filter with the KeyGea pod?
Absolutely, but keep in mind that BPI certification applies only to the specific lid and filter combinations we have tested and certified. While you can use alternative components, we strongly recommend using our validated pairings to ensure optimal sealing, extraction performance, and compostability, while minimizing the risk of issues like delamination.
Is KeyGea compatible with K-Cup® machines?
Yes, KeyGea is fully compatible with K-Cup® brewing systems, including Keurig® machines. It has been tested on multiple models for both home and office use.
